Fall Listening Session

Notes on Fall Listening Session November 2022 - 20 participants

Purpose of the Session

  • making connections with new members

  • welcoming returning members

  • finding out what services YOU want and what YOU need from the organization

  • what modality do you prefer for NCTLA meetings and events? Virtual, In Person, etc.

Many participants said they recently found themselves in a new position at their college due to reorganization.  How does that reorganization effect services to students?

  • Location is key.

    • If the reorganization involved a physical move to a high(er) trafficked building or part of campus then there was a positive impact with more student engagement.

    • If it involved a physical move to a more remote part of campus or a building without classes the loss of traffic had a considerably negative impact.

  • Some reorganization and physical moves have increased collaboration between departments.

  • Problematic: moving to a new location with no funding to appropriately furnish and equip the space for our services.

  • Reorganization in order to secure funding was noted, “Part of the move to the library was for getting some money for technology.”

Several schools received “COVID Funding” for the initial pivot to online support and tutoring, especially technology purchases.  However, that funding was not sustained and did not cover the costs of labor.  Both in person and online tutoring are essential

Platforms used for in-house virtual instruction/tutoring

  • Bb Collaborate

  • Zoom

  • Teams

  • Google Meet

Third party services used by participants for virtual instruction/tutoring

Smarthinking

  • Nettutor

  • Thinkingstorm

  • Upswing

  • WC online

What services or benefits would you like to see provided by NCTLA:

  • Networking

  • Idea exchange

  • Professional Development

  • “Workshops” on specific topics

    • Collecting FTE

    • Inclusion of “soft skills” and “life skills” into our teaching, especially helping students overcome the technology gap

    • Tutor Training

    • Information on supplemental instruction

    • Marketing our services to students

    • Overcoming student held stigmatization of tutoring

Should NCTLA reach out to the NC system office and have representative for support?

  • It would be nice to have someone we could go to for support, guidance and clarification on specific issues.

  • Who would be able to provide support for this group?

  • We don’t want things to go from “support” to “oversight”

The leadership has been discussing the balance of in person and virtual. What are your thoughts?

  • Budget constraints make virtual a favorable option

  • Local / Regional in-person gatherings would help

  • Virtual makes it easier for students to attend since they don’t have to travel

  • Monthly listening sessions (virtual)

  • Mixed modality for meetings: if an in-person conference, could the sessions still be available virtually?  Webcast?
