Numerous negative narratives paint a bleak picture of student performance, and tantalizing theories about how to fix them are seemingly endless. Rather than clarifying paths for us to move forward, these narratives further complicate matters on how to assist students. When so much noise surrounds an issue that it’s difficult to find the true north, it’s time to Sankofa. Sankofa is a principle derived from the Akan people of Ghana that says one should look to the past to make progress in the future. The industrial complex of educational gadgetry has helped us label and track students, and shiny techno toys have allowed us to create fancy reports and impressive dashboards, but are we helping students do their own academic work better and with greater reward? In my years of working with students, I found that the most valuable assistance we can offer students is helping them improve the quality of contributions they make to their academic work.

This keynote session takes participants back to a place of simplicity and clarity, and then empowers them to move forward toward a bright and productive future. Participants will gain a:

    • clear, actionable definition of academic work

    • formula to use to guide students through academic work

    • methodology for helping any student to their best work

    • basic reporting process for adding greater value to their institutions
